CORTALIM, JULY 21 Fear gripped residents of 1st Arvale and nearby areas in Cortalim after 58 families were served notices pertaining to their houses likely to be affected by the proposed 6-laning of NH 17.

Fear gripped residents of 1st Arvale and nearby areas in Cortalim after 58 families were served notices pertaining to their houses likely to be affected by the proposed 6-laning of NH 17.
The affected residents some who were rehabilitated by the government earlier were shaken after the Talathi S Kerkar served them with notices asking them to attend hearing with the Deputy Collector and Land Acquisition Officer on the appointed date.
A official from the PWD connected with the six-laning of NH 17 confirmed that the 6-lanning would be done on 45 meters width and said that there would be no reduction on the width of the road. “The Central government had shot down the proposal of the Kerala Government to reduce the width of the road to 35 meters,” the source informed Herald.
The official however could not throw light on the extent of houses that would be affected since all would depend on the bridge that would be constructed. The official however conceded that the Konkan Railway bridge was coming in the way of the new bridge.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to assuage the feelings of the residents and to bring about some solution a meeting has been convened on July 23, Friday at 1st Arvale at 6 pm.
The meeting would be addressed by the local MLA and Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho who has been vocal at various fora  in order to save the houses likely to affected by the proposed six-laning  of NHs.
