PANJIM: The Goa State Committee of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has demanded that government resolve the issue of the tourist taxi operators and protect the liquor vends – the two issues that have rocked the State in the recent past.
“Resolve the issue of tourist taxi and bus operators, trucks, rickshaws and other commercial vehicles. Protect the trade and business of liquor vendors,” are the two of many demands listed out by the union ahead of May Day on Monday.
The State has been tackling the issues tourist taxis operators being slammed by a large section of the people for charging exorbitant tariffs from its passengers, most of whom are tourists. A matter is also pending in the high court that seeks directions to the government to implement its notification about installing digital meters.
Whereas the Supreme Court order on highway liquor ban has impacted business of thousands of liquor outlets even as Goa government is contemplating to either challenge the order or file a review plea shortly.
Meanwhile, AITUC has also demanded to implement 7th pay commission recommendation to all government and semi-government corporations, and autonomous bodes; abolish contract system and regularize services, ensure dedicated transport to all industrial estates on a 24X7 basis and stop commercialization of water resources among others.
Union general secretary Christopher Fonseca said the workers will assemble at Kranti circle, opposite the Panjim bus stand and hold a rally near the Panjim Church Square on May 1.A public meeting will thereafter follow.
