There is some hope the Sonsoddo issue may be resolved as the town administration and the TCP Minister has announced a near permanent measure to reduce the dump without the necessity of segregation.
The TCP Minister, Vijai Sardesai, has made his intentions clear on clearing the dump using every possible technology to make garbage-free Margao.
The fire at the Sonsoddo dump on Monday has again brought the helplessness and carelessness of the MMC and Concessioner to solve the root of the problem. However, now, sidelining the stop gap arrangements the TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai has informed that he has received a proposal from an agency which has a technology named black hole which reduces the garbage into fly ash. The TCP Minister has agreed that there was indeed an impasse in the entire matter due to the mix waste nature of the garbage.
“The technology reduces an amount of 1 tonne garbage into just 7-8 kgs of fly ash,” said Vijai.
He said this proposal and the technology which is employed are being approved by the Goa State Pollution Control Board. “The proponents of the project have been sent to the Solid Waste Management Corporation MD Sanjit Rodrigues and word has also gone to the MLA of Margao to keep himself in the loop,” said Vijai further adding that the MMC has been asked to take this project on pilot basis without buying the machinery and 15 days of full-fledged trial of the technology.
“We are attempting to reduce the dump that is not being treated and removed by the concessioner and if the technology works we will ask the concessioner to utilise this technology for further treatment of garbage,” said the TCP Minister.
The minister has informed that the Cabinet has approved a fund of Rs 9 crore for mining of garbage dumps and also added that the government is technically and financially ready for the tackling of garbage. The minister also said the minimum time for mobilisation of the technology will take at least 45 days but he has also said that they plan to mobilise resources soon for setup and operation before monsoon.
The minister wants the plant at no cost format like per tonne basis with 15 days of trial.
The technology has been operated in Hyderabad and Bangalore and is also approved by the GSPCB.
“The problem with the state like Goa which has less land can’t have a composting based plant for garbage handling like Fomento Green plant which needs large tracks of land for land fills. Hence this technology can come as a boon for the state” said Vijai.
He also said that the Concessioner hasn’t been spoken to regarding this as Vijai claims that it is not going to be of any use.
