MARGAO: South Goa Zilla Panchayat Chairperson Suvarna Tendulkar on Wednesday urged the South Goa ZP members to submit their proposals for development works in their respective areas before the Assembly elections Code of Conduct is implemented.
This appeal was made by Tendulkar at the South Goa Zilla Panchayat general body meeting held in Margao.
He added that the meeting was also convened now before the Code of Conduct is in place and that the funds sent by the government for development works need to be utilised before that and thus the proposals of ZP members have to be processed as soon as possible.
“Since our last meeting, a total of 85 tenders and work orders have already been issued for different types of development works. Another 55 tenders will be tendered shortly. So far, the government has received Rs 8.85 crore in development grants from the State government, Rs 10 crore in administrative grants, Rs 5.8 crore earlier from the 15th Finance Commission and now Rs 5.5 crore,” Tendulkar informed.
Incidentally, while it was the chairperson’s contention that the ZP is being supported by the government, the opposition SGZP members hit out at the government for not devolving adequate amount of funds and power to the ZP, which they asserted is needed in order to strengthen the ZP’s ability to contribute more towards rural development.
