MARGAO: The government has finally met the long pending demand of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat for spacious space for its functioning as it has allotted space for the district Panchayat body in the old district Collectorate building.
South Goa ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues said the office will be inaugurated on February 18, at 3.30 pm before the election code comes into force. She, however, has expressed her unhappiness over the fact that the government has allotted space for the Zilla Panchayat on the third floor when the ZP had staked claim on the second floor. Secondly, she said the ZP had asked the government to allot an entire floor to meet its growing requirements, adding that only 3/4th area of the third floor is allotted for the body. “I will write to the government to allot the entire third floor to the Zilla Panchayat. The additional space will help us to set up a conference room, where meetings can be held of the District Planning Committee as well,” she added.
While the inauguration of the new office premises will take place on Wednesday, Nelly informed the actual shifting of the office would take about a month’s time. “Most probably, the new Zilla Panchayat body will function from the new office premises after the ensuing elections,” she added.
Presently, the South Goa Zilla Panchayat has been functioning from the RTO building at Arlem-Raia.
