Speaker issues notices to 12 MLAs on disqualification petitions

PANJIM: Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Rajesh Patnekar on Saturday issued notices to 10 former Congress MLAs, and two former MGP MLAs in connection with disqualification petitions filed against them by Congress and MGP separately.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar, who filed a disqualification petition against his former party men, has also been issued notice to appear before the Speaker on February 13 for a hearing.
Chodankar on Thursday had urged the Speaker to expedite the hearing in the case after the Supreme Court in an order had observed that such cases should be decided within a timeframe.
The party, in August 2019 had filed disqualification petitions against 10 MLAs for “defecting to another party”.
The petition was filed under Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India. State Legislature Secretary Namrata Ulman, in the notice issued to Chodankar, has said that the matter is fixed for hearing on February 13, 2020 at 11 am in the Chamber of Speaker at Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim.
“You are requested to take notice and in default of your appearance either in person or through counsel, the petition shall be heard and determined in your absence,” the notice reads.
