Following the successful experiment with the pilot project of the traffic speed detector installed at Dayanand Bandodkar Marg in Miramar, the traffic cell of Goa Police will install such radars at major junctions and corners of the city.
The speed detector automatically captures the snap of the vehicle and registration plates if it crosses the given speed limit of the particular road or junction and automatically sends the information to the department to issue challan for violation.
Speaking to Herald, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dharmesh Angle said that at major junctions the speed detectors will be installed to snap the violations after our experience with the trial of the pilot project.
“We have already stored data of over 1500 vehicles that have been caught over speeding on the Panjim-Miramar road. It is already proposed with the government to install more such radars which will minimize the rate of accidents on the roads”, he said.
He informed that the speed detector at Miramar is on pilot basis and not to issue challans. However, he said, “senior officers may decide upon it whether to issue challans or not”.
A radar speed gun has a sign that indicates your speed at a sign on left hand side of the road. If your speed is above the limit and you continue to maintain that speed a second enforcer speed camera will snap up a picture of your vehicle and your number plate and send the data to the traffic cell of violators who can then be challaned.
The speed gun’s radar is installed with a camera that clicks when any vehicle is over speeding.
DySP Angle said that they want to study how it works, “it is basically a test”.
“We want the vehicle mounted and tripod mounted speed detectors for effective implementation”, he said.
Officers have informed that each instrument costs around Rs eight lakhs and is the reason why the traffic department is very specific about its installation only at major junctions.
Increase in accidental deaths in Goa has drawn the attention of government and the law enforcing agencies who are strictly maintaining enforcement and regularisation.
