MAPUSA: The last rites of former St Andre MLA Teotonio Pereira was held with full State honours at St Jerome’s Church, Mapusa on Thursday.
Four-time MLA Pereira (92) passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday. The mortal remains of the former MLA, wrapped in the tricolour, was carried from his residence to the church where funeral mass was conducted.
Many political leaders and large number of people paid their last respect to the departed soul.
Meanwhile, the Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) has mourned the sad and untimely demise of its former Vice President and former St Andre MLA Teotonio Pereira.
In his death, the DKA has lost a staunch supporter and well wisher of Konkani cause. Pereira was MLA representing St Andre Constituency for four terms, the initial three on the United Goans Party and the last representing Indian National Congress.
During his terms, he served in the best interest of Goa and recognition and growth of our mother tongue. He was gravely involved in the Goa Opinion Poll ensuring that Goa remain a separate identity of India.
He was also involved in the language agitation and worked for accepting the Konkani as the Official Language of the State.
The DKA had felicitated Pereira for his contribution for Konkani by organising ‘Konknni Mogiak Bhett’ and releasing a book on the occasion.
He always supported DKA and attended most of the functions of the Akademi, the DKA said offering condolences to the bereaved family.
