Staff shortage, unpaid salaries top agenda

MARGAO: The special Council meeting called by MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva on Tuesday took up nine items on the agenda of which staff shortage, unpaid salaries, lack of funds for MMC and pending dues to contractors dominated discussions.
All the councillors objected to the delay in works and the reshuffle of staff by the chief officer and demanded immediate recruitment of new staff in place of retired ones. The councillors also voted in favour of paying pending salaries of garbage collectors, painting and beautification of the MMC building.
D’Silva, questioned over the delayed works, said, “Two senior officers have been transferred, accounts officer, tax officer, superintendent, recovery officer, no one is available.” The council has resolved to write to the DMA, Urban Development Ministry and the chief minister for reinstating crucial officers.
The Council on Tuesday has resolved to increase the fees of the door-to-door garbage collection to Rs 50 from the previous Rs 30 and the chairperson has also ordered the release of pending salaries of the workers.
The councillors were angered over the municipality’s dwindling resources. Many grass cutting and tree cutting machines and road work and other machines were found to be not working. “If nothing is in order, nothing can be done, let’s forget the works and go on a vacation” said an angry Sadanand Naik.
