PANJIM: The Goa government has set in motion the process to implement the DigiLocker project in all government departments under which documents and certificates will be issued in digital format.

Information Technology (IT) Department on Monday conducted the first sensitisation programme for heads of departments and educational institutes like Goa University and Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on the DigiLocker project. IT Department will act as the nodal agency to guide and oversee the implementation of the DigiLocker project in the State with the assistance of the National eGovernance Division (NeGD).
Information Technology Deputy Director Harshad Pawar informed Herald that DigiLocker project is like a DigiWallet of citizens. Under DigiLocker, all documents and certificates are stored in the cloud thereby eliminating the use of physical documents. If documents and certificates of citizens are stored in DigiLocker and verified, then citizens will not be asked to produce original physical documents or certificates.
Currently VAHAN (Registration certificates of Vehicles) and SARATHI (driving licences) launched by Union Ministry of Transport across the country are available on DigiLocker platform and they are treated as valid documents on par with original documents.
A citizen can upload scanned copies of his/her documents and access it anywhere he/she want. However, the citizens will have to download the mobile app and sign up for a DigiLocker account to get a dedicated cloud storage space linked to their Aadhar Card (UIDAI). Thereafter they can upload scanned copies of their legacy documents, while availing any eservices.
For now, every government department has been asked to appoint a nodal officer to implement the DigiLocker initiative in their respective departments and to register on the DigiLocker platform.
According to Pawar, currently 30 government departments have been uploaded on the Goa Online Portal and 136 various services are available there. Also about 10,000 documents/certificates have already been pushed in Digi Accounts through the Goa Online Portal.
Goa has 5.51 lakh unique online registered voters even as 15 lakh applications were received to avail various e-services, he said.
Pawar said the IT Department will conduct more sensitisation programmes and create adequate awareness about the DigiLocker project through its 100 common service centres and through social media platforms.
