State may outsource ICU management in govt hospitals

Vishwajit says consultants will bring in their expertise

PANJIM: The State Health Department is contemplating outsourcing the management of the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in government run hospitals, including Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), in an effort to revamp the ICUs and provide high quality services.
Speaking to Herald, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the government is in the planning process to outsource the ICUs, wherein the consultants will bring in their expertise and interventionists. “ICUs are the heart of hospitals. Unfortunately, we lack professional staff to manage them,” he said.
“The government hospital, specially the GMC, which is visited by patients outside Goa, requires a good ICU. The move is still in the planning stage. It will be a mission to save lives,” the Minister said.
Rane said he is trying to follow the model adopted by hospitals across the country, in a bid to strengthen the service at GMC and the ICU by bringing in experts from various medical fields to provide their services. “I will be visiting some government-run hospitals in other State where such a model is being followed,” he added.
The Minister is also in talks with consultants in Mumbai, who can visit GMC with their expertise and interventionists.
The Minister said that the two state-of-the-art operation theaters at Valpoi Health Centre will be functional by December 31 and minor surgeries will be conducted there. Rane, on Friday, visited the health centre along with GSIDC engineers and Health Director Dr Sanjay Dalvi to rectify the problems faced by the Hospital authorities.
“We have already made available all specialist doctors who will visit CHC Valpoi for OPDs,” he said.
Rane said the health department has also brought in a new sonography machine for the CHC as well as Rural Medical Dispensary (RMD) and a new digital X-ray machine will be installed.
“All maintenance work will be undertaken by GSIDC. I have instructed them to rectify all problems as it is my dream project to provide best heath facilities to my people of Sattari,” he added.
