PANJIM: Heavy rains and strong winds continued into the weekend, with Saturday also witnessing a lot of rain.
The capital city too experienced a similar situation as many roads continued to be flooded. At Bhatulem, a huge tree collapsed on a bungalow damaging a major portion of the structure and two cars.
According to the Fire and Emergency Department, the control room received at least 30 distress calls from across the State with majority calls of uprooting of trees.
The State has been receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall during the last four days with India Meteorological Department, Goa predicting heavy rainfall at few places on Sunday and at isolated places across both the Districts from July 1-3. A weather warning has been issued to fishermen valid for another five days, an IMD official said.
While the State continued to receive incessant rainfall, strong winds in Divar Island on Saturday uprooted trees causing minor damage.
Locals claimed that the wind blew on Saturday night with high speed and even paddy fields taken up for cultivation were affected. Electricity poles and iron railings, close to a field also got uprooted. In some places, the winds affected houses, but there was no major damage.
“The winds blew at such a rate that trees would bend almost touching the ground. The branches of trees have been broken and some old trees were rooted,” Jerry D’Souza, a Divar resident informed Herald.
Another resident Norman Coelho complained of poor phone and Internet connectivity in lieu of incessant rainfall.
