MARGAO: Margao MLA Digambar Kamat along with PWD and Power officials on Tuesday finally descended on the much-neglected foot bridge-cum two-wheeler bridge over the railway track, connecting the old station road and Calconda.
The footbridge – which had turned a heaven for anti-social elements for want of illumination – was craving for attention for months now, with the damaged surface literally turning the road unfit for two-wheelers.
Taking cognisance of the pathetic state of affairs with no proper illumination and the surface damaged, the Margao MLA instructed the PWD and Power officials to take up the repair work on topmost priority. Kamat said the Power department has already prepared the estimates for the bridge illumination costing Rs 1.5 lakh, adding that the work of installing the lamps would begin soon after the tender.
As far as the bridge repair work is concerned, the Margao MLA said the PWD has been told to first get the potholes repaired as a temporary measure, before taking up the painting work.
Though the footbridge has come in handy for residents of Calconda and Navelim to get to the market, motorists have avoided the bridge in recent times because of its bad condition.
Motorists are also avoiding the bridge after sunset given the presence of anti-social elements, who had in the past robbed many an innocent two-wheeler rider on the bridge.
Kamat said he has instructed the PWD to trim the branches protruding on the bridge taking into account the safety of the pedestrians and motorists alike.
