PONDA: An ongoing cricket coaching camp in Borim had to be abruptly called off on Thursday much to the disappointment of 45 boys and girls, and it had nothing to do with bad light or poor ground conditions.
Believe it or not, the nets installed on the ground were stolen by miscreants on Wednesday night.
The cricket coaching camp, which started on April 16 and was to go on till April 30, was jointly organised by Goa Cricket Association (GCA) and Nayal Cricket Club (Borim) for school boys and girls from Borim locality at a small ground near Sakhwar-Borim.
According to locals, the nets had been fenced around the ground to prevent the ball from falling into the adjacent nullah.
Speaking to Herald, GCA Development Commissioner Akbar Mulla and coach Felix Dias have condemned the act by the miscreants.
“The net, which is priced at about Rs 5,500, was tied to a coconut tree and was about 100 feet long and 30 feet wide,” said Mulla, adding that a complaint has been lodged with Ponda Police.
The theft has not deterred the enthusiasm of those organising the camp.
“The coaching will continue here,” insisted Mulla. “However, it would be nice if the GCA has its own ground since we face hardship in training young cricket players in the absence of a GCA ground.”
