CANACONA: The municipality, panchayats and NGOs in Canacona are striving to keep the taluka clean and green, but stinking garbage dumped along the NH66 has irked motorists and residents last week.
It is now widely believed that this noxious garbage could have fallen while being carried uncovered from Goa to Karnataka for disposal. As it is not baled properly nor fastened effectively on to the truck, the garbage plummets down from the truck, maybe even without the knowledge of the driver or cleaner of the vehicle, locals opine.
Since last one week such mixed garbage was found strewn at three different places _ first near Bhumi Purush Temple while the second was in front of Anil Bhagat’s house both at Gulem in Canacona. The third such incident was reported at the now defunct entry toll plaza near Polem on Thursday.
“These trucks loaded with garbage, possibly to be taken to cement manufacturing facilities in Karnataka travel during night time and as the loosely packed bags are not fastened nor covered with tarpaulin they jump out of the truck on turns and at speed humps,” revealed Vishant Prabhu a resident of Loliem-Polem.
Enquiries with different agencies entrusted with the smooth movement, discipline of traffic and law and order on NH66, feigned ignorance of the issue and assured to detect the vehicles carrying the garbage out of the State. They also promised to instruct the truck drivers to cover the garbage effectively as per the guidelines in place.
Residents immediately brought it to the notice of Loliem-Polem VP, who promptly cleared the rubbish by deploying their labourers, sources said.
