MAPUSA: To solve the stray cattle menace, the Gomantak Gosevak Mahasang from Bicholim impounded ten stray cattle loitering around and creating inconvenience in Calangute over the last two days.
The Calangute Panchayat appointed this animal welfare organisation to pick up stray cattle in the village. All the bovines caught or impounded are transported to a gaushala at Sikeri Mayem in Bicholim. On Thursday, six cattle were picked from the Calangute beach promenade area.
On Wednesday evening, the Gomantak Gosevak Mahasang from Bicholim was successful in impounding six stray cattle from the car parking area at Calangute Association ground.
Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins told Herald that the panchayat has requested all cattle owners not to let their cattle stray.
“Since October 2, the animal welfare organisation has been impounding stray cattle. We are serious about this move and the owners will be fined. The stray cattle obstruct the smooth flow of traffic and also cause accidents.
Since last two days, 12 stray cattle have been impounded and there will be a procedure that will be followed for the release of these cattle,” Martins said.
The Calangute panchayat is concerned over stray cattle menace which is causing traffic obstruction, deaths due to accidents on roads, agricultural damage, and strewing garbage on the streets. The stray cattle also intrude into tourist places like the beaches which leave an ugly image in the minds of the tourist visiting these places.
