QUEPEM: Residents from Quepem on Thursday complained that street vendors including fishermen conducting business along the roadside at Borimol junction are causing in traffic congestion.
The residents complained that the mad rush at the junction is causing a lot of inconvenience to travellers commuting along the Quepem-Curchorem route.
Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar said, “The Council has taken the decision to shift market from Don Bosco School to Borimol Junction.”
“I inspected the area where the market is shifted and did not find any traffic congestion. This arrangement is just for a few days and if there is traffic congestion then a traffic police will be deployed to ensure smooth flow of traffic,” Narvekar assured.
QMC chairperson Suchita Shirvaikar said, “Earlier, the fishermen and vendors were conducting their businesses with municipality’s permission outside the Don Bosco School premises. However, there were objections to these activities. Today, when they come with their goods and since it is to do with their livelihood we shifted them to the Borimol junction for the time being.”
“However, we will not allow these fishermen and vendors to carry out business in future. The QMC will only allow those with municipal badges to conduct business. Sometimes the situation goes out of control when vendors from outside Quepem install stalls along the roadside. Today, witnessing the rush at Borimol junction, I sent the market inspector to check the situation. We will initiate strict action against those who violate the protocols.”
