CANACONA, FEB 15
A picnic ended in a tragedy for a group of 10 students from a Bangalore-based technology institute, when one of their colleagues drowned at Palolem beach on Sunday at about 3 pm.
According to sources, it would have been a double tragedy to the young students studying in Bangalore, had it not for a foreign tourist who rescued another student from drowning.
According to Canacona Police, the saved student, Ishant Tripati (19), who is a native of Kanpur-UP, was rushed to Canacona Community Health Centre from where he was shifted to Hospicio, Margao under serious condition.
Till late Sunday evening, Canacona police could not find the body of the missing student one Mayank Kumar Singh (19), also a native of UP at Allahabad.
Canacona police further informed that the search would be continued on Monday, while further investigation is going on under the supervision of Canacona PI Suraj Halarnkar.
It may be recalled that Palolem Beach has neither government nor private lifeguards to protect any unsuspecting tourists getting carried away in strong under currents.
