SANGUEM: Despite allegations of malpractices and misappropriation of funds made by some sugarcane cultivators against transport contractor Francisco Mascarenhas, a majority of cultivators from Wadem, Rivona, and Canacona have once again chosen him for the harvesting and transportation of their crops.
Francisco, also known as Ayetin, has been assisting these farmers with harvesting and transportation since the Sanjivani Sugar Factory ceased crushing cane four years ago. Despite doubts about Francisco’s involvement this year due to the allegations made against him last year, sugarcane harvesting began in Neturlim, bringing joy to the cultivators.

Farmers who gathered in Neturlim expressed satisfaction with Francisco’s services, stating that they have received full payment for the past four years. Francisco assured farmers a payment of Rs 1,800 per tonne, covering all other costs, including labor charges and transportation expenses.
He also informed them that they would receive a higher price for their produce this year due to the low sugarcane production in Karnataka. Farmers urged the prompt reopening of the Sanjivani Sugar Factory to address their concerns, especially since the government’s five-year compensation period for the factory’s closure is nearing its end.
Farmers warned of taking to the streets if the government does not restart the sugar factory soon, emphasising the need for the new ethanol plant.
Francisco, a member of the Facilitation Committee formed by the government, mentioned that the Sugarcane Farmers Association plans to stage a demonstration at the sugar factory on either December 17 or 18.
