PANJIM: Suspended constable Amjad Karol, who has had three criminal offences registered against him in a span of just seven months, continues to embarrass the police department with his alcohol-related aggression.
The latest example is when he barged into the north district office at Porvorim demanding to know the status of the two ongoing disciplinary enquires against him.
His anti-social behaviour has posed a safety threat, particularly to women staff. “Just last week he came drunk asking us when his salary will be released. The male staffers had to push him outside the office,” one of the administration staffers at Porvorim Police Station told this reporter.
Sources confirmed that he appears before the disciplinary authority in a drunken condition as he would do while on duty before his suspension in 2014. “He still hasn’t lost the habit of reporting to duty in an inebriated condition. Even after his suspension, he has the audacity to appear before the higher ups in drunken state,” an officer said.
Karol had his first brush with the law when he dragged an elderly destitute Abida Beig, beat her mercilessly and stripped her naked in full public view on March 23, 2014. The incident rocked the State calling for strict action against him. Police higher-ups were quick to suspend him and slap a criminal FIR against him, resulting in his arrest. He was soon to get conditional bail from the local court.
Over five months later, on September 21, 2014, Karol attacked another senior citizen – Laxmi Hazare – by trespassing into her property at Pilgao in Bicholim, abused her and threatened her with dire consequences. This was not the end of his notoriety. The next day he assaulted one Putosh Dhongrikar with a spade. The man sustained serious head injuries. He was arrested for both the offences only to be bailed out in a few hours.
North SP Umesh Gaonkar informed that the suspended cop was acquitted in the ‘spade attack’ case while the other two cases are pending trial before the court. “We had taken swift action against him on each of the three cases. He was charge sheeted under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The disciplinary proceedings are still going on,” he said speaking to Herald.
