Vanamohotsav at Pernem school
PERNEM: Vanamohotsav day was celebrated at Sant Xavier Vidyalaya Korgao-Pernem on July 3, with an action song by the students on the need to preserve our earth. This was followed by a powerpoint presentation stressing the significance of forests and the need to conserve them. Later saplings of Acacia, Teak, Almond, Amla etc were planted.  ‘Caption –Crown’ competition was organized. 
Aldona parish feast celebrated
ALDONA: The feast of St Thomas was celebrated amidst pomp and gaiety at St Thomas Church, Aldona. Fr Amandio Valadares, Parish Priest of St Thomas Church was the main celebrant. In his homily he stressed on St Thomas the Apostle of India and his , faith in Jesus Christ. The theme of the year was ‘Faith creates communion, strengthens family and commissions to renew the society.’ The feast mass was well attended. 
Verna school PTA meet held
VERNA: The PTA general body meeting of Fr Agnel Multipurpose HSS, Verna was held on June 28 in the Raimundo, Lilia and Fr Alcantra Gracias auditorium. Principal Bruno E Carvalho, Manager C K Mathew, Vice Principal Vivek Rodrigues, PTA President Bruno Gomindes, PTA Secretary Oscar D’Costa and Treasurer. Allwyn Fernandes were present. Carvalho congratulated the meritorious students and advised parents to educate their children in misuse of mobile phones. He said that this year, the institution was completing 25 years. Meritorious students were felicitated with scholarships.
Scholarship award for Goans
CALANGUTE: Hotel Goan Heritage (unit of Gulf Goans Hotels,) has announced scholarships for the academic year 2013-2014 for the top rankers of HSSC examination of Calangute village in science, arts and commerce. The top rankers should submit their applications with the certified copy of mark sheet and proof of Goan identity addressed to the General Manager, Hotel Goan Heritage, Gaura Vaddo, Calangute, by July 15.
Sites inspected at Mayem
MAYEM: Deputy Speaker Anant Shet visited different areas in Mayem constituency to discuss the infrastructural projects for village. Shet said infrastructural projects like Shirgao-Assonora by-pass road, Mayem Vaiginim by-pass road, a road connecting Poira with Shirgao, over bridge near Tikhazan-Mayem railway crossing, road widening from Mayem to Calvim will be taken up soon and the tenders will be floated. Shet was accompanied by Shirgao Sarpanch Ladko Palani, panchas Babuso Gaonkar, Narendra Tari, Vijay Pole and Vishwas Chodankar, Konkan Railway officer Raju Parkar, senior official Chandrakant Pednekar, junior engineer Abhay Dhuri, GSIDC deputy manager Suresh Sangodkar, PWD engineer Ganpat Siddhaye and T Gawade.
Women rally for resume mining 
BICHOLIM: About 200 women from Bicholim staged a rally on Thursday and later met Deputy Speaker and Mayem MLA Anant Shet to pressurise the government to resume mining in the State. Women representing mahila mandals and self-help groups from Mayem, Bicholim and surrounding areas gathered at Bicholim bus stand and staged the rally which went from the bus stand to the Deputy Speaker’s office. Later, they met Deputy Speaker and Mayem MLA Shet and submitted a memorandum to him. They also demanded an appointment with the chief minister to personally convey their demand. Shet assured the women that the CM and the govt is working out a solution to the issue. 
Vanmahotsava held at Pilar
PILAR: Trees are man’s best friends, said Minister for Forest and Environment Alina Saldanha, who was the chief guest for the vanmahotsava day celebration at Fr Agnel Central School on July 4. The programme began with a prayer dance. The Principal Fr  Milagres Baretto welcomed. Fancy dress and elocution competitions were the highlights of the day. A skit on saving trees was presented by the students. Later sapling were planted by the dignitaries. 
Nursing course begins in Panjim
PANJIM: Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera in association with Jan Shikshan Saunstha, sponsored 12 girls for a 6-month nursing course. The programme was organized by Ramchandra Garde Principal of Ideal High School where the course will be held. Nimisha Pal, Akshaya  Chiknekar, Arundhati Salkar, Clare D’Souza and Pallavi Salgaocar, Siddharth Zantye were present along with two panchayat members Swapnil Phadte and Roshni Kavlekar.
