CURCHOREM: Mindful of public outrage over unbearable stench at the baling unit in Cacora, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral has claimed that work to construct a new shed for the unit is in full swing and the problem would be resolved once the new shed is made operational.
Speaking to Herald after inspecting the construction of a new shed for the baling unit at Cacora Industrial Estate, Cabral said, “In order to clear plastic menace, the baling unit was started in a temporary shed belonging to Goa Handicraft Corporation.”
“Initially, difficulties come when you start any project and it takes some time to put everything in order,” said Cabral, when asked about the stench at the baling unit.
“The work to construct a new shed for the unit is in full swing and once it is completed, everything will be operated from inside and nothing will be kept outside, including plastic waste, to avoid the stench and presence of house flies and mosquitoes,” he informed.
Admitting the difficulties faced by residents of Voddlemoll-Cacora, Cabral said the problems can be rectified only when the plant becomes operational.
“I’m with the people and their concerns will be addressed,” assured Cabral.
Asked why plastic waste had been brought from other parts of the State, particularly from North Goa, when the bailing unit was meant to segregate waste only from Quepem, Sanguem and Dharbandora talukas, Cabral replied, “Sometimes, the quantity of waste falls short and instead of keeping the insufficient waste on the ground and the machinery idle, some extra waste from other parts of Goa has to be brought to make the waste sufficient per day.”
It may be recalled that residents of Voddlemoll-Cacora, Curchorem, were angry after plastic waste from North Goa was being dumped at the Cacora baling unit. Religious services at the nearby Holy Cross Chapel were disrupted, after house flies and mosquitoes entered the chapel and the congregation could not bear the stench emanating from the baling site.
