VASCO: Students of St Therese’s High School, Mangor Hill, Vasco, on Tuesday staged an awareness rally ‘Swachh Bharat Saptah’ from the school to the Mangor slum area. The students holding placards and shouting slogans took part in the rally and culminated near Mangor junction. Some students were dressed as famous political and religious leaders. At the slum area, the students urged the people not to throw garbage everywhere, as it has harmful effect on health.
Inter-religious meeting  at Rachol 
PANJIM: Rachol Seminary will conduct an annual inter-religious prayer meet on October 2, on the theme ‘Appreciating God’s creativity in Diversity.’ The prayer meeting will commence with the lighting of the lamp and garlanding of the enthroned sacred scriptures. There will be special readings from the holy books of the three chief religions, followed by short explanation of it. The Hindus will be represented by Dr Kamladevi Kuncoleikar, Vice principal of PES College, Ponda, the Muslims will be led by Altaf Shah, while Jose Marie Miranda will lead the Catholic community.
Cycle treasure hunt at Nagoa
CORTALIM: Our Lady of Succour High School Nagoa, Salcete, will organise cycle treasure hunt and Nagoa village cleanness drive on October 2, as part of the commemoration of Golden Jubilee celebrations. All past pupils of the school are invited for the function. Roger Braganza (deputy general manager) of Gate Gourmet at Dabolim, will be the chief guest, while Marcus Faira, Verna Panch, will be the guest of honour.
Elders honoured at Curchorem
CURCHOREM: World Elder’s Day was celebrated at Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem, on Wednesday. On the occasion, grandparents of SSC students were felicitated by chief guest Dr Medora D’Costa and Fr Agnelo D’Souza. Earlier, the programme began with Eucharistic celebration by former Director of Pilar Music School Fr Agnelo D’Souza with Principal Fr Frank Mendes, Headmaster Fr Walter Miranda and Vice-Principal of Institute of Hotel Management, Curchorem, Fr Joaquim Rebello. Later, the students presented various cultural programmes to entertain the elders.
Electricity pole knocked down in Merces
OLD GOA: Power supply was affected at Gaunchem Bhat, Merces and surrounding areas as an electricity pole was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle in the wee hours of Tuesday. When contacted, AE Bandekar informed that the electricity department replaced the electricity pole, incurring an expenditure of Rs 20,000, and the power was restored at about 2.30 pm. 
“An unidentified vehicle knocked down the pole. 
thereby affecting power supply in the area,” he added.
Panel to promote art elected 
MAYEM: Chitpawan Brahmin Sangh, Goa unit, has formed ‘Sanskar Sanwardhan Sangh’ at Yogeshwari temple, Parvatinagar-Kulan, Sanquelim, to promote art and talent of young artistes. Drama director Abhay Jog inaugurated the sangh. Varada Fadke, drama artiste Prasad Gadgil, Chitpawan Brahman Sangh secretary Vishnu Marathe, treasurer Pradeep Bhide and advisor Vasant Marathe were present. Competitions like fancy dress, Bhaktigeet, poetry and elocution were organised. Office bearers are Chinmay Marathe (president), Poorva Marahte (secretary), Pradeep Gadgil (joint secretary), Sampada Bhide (treasurer) and Gaurish Barve and Poonam Barve (members).
Dandiya dance contest at Pilerne
PANJIM: Pilerne Citizens Forum will be organising an all Goa dandiya dance competition on October 2, to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. The competition will get underway from 8 am near Shree Shantadurga Temple at Moicawaddo, Pilerne. Cash prizes will be awarded.
Curca church gets water connection
OLD GOA: The church of Our Lady of Rosary, Curca, finally got a water connection after 25 years as St Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh took the initiative to fulfil the demand. “Some parishioners approached me and highlighted the problem faced by the parish priest and parishioners, particularly during the feast, which is on October 12,” he informed. Wagh said he summoned the PWD officials and directed them to provide water connection to the church immediately. Executive Engineer Dilip Dhavlikar immediately began work to lay the water pipeline and on September 27, water was released to the church. 
PVS concerned over unemployment
PONDA: Expressing concern over rising unemployment in the State, the Ponda Vikas Samithi (PVS) has demanded a halt in extension to retired government servant and teachers as well as allowances to jobless youth. The PVS further stated that Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) and PWD should try to take possession of remaining part of Kranti Maidan in Ponda from the Central government, instead of fighting over development work at the Kranti Maidan. Commenting on the Kranti Maidan, PVS said the place should be kept as an open space for public programmes. “We will oppose any development work, if it hampers the organisation of public events. The State government should take possession of part of Kranti Maidan Ponda, which is presently with the military,” PVS said.
Inner healing retreat at Pilar
PANJIM: Pilar Fathers will conduct a residential inner healing retreat in English at Pilar Animation Centre from October 4 (10 am) to October 5 (4.30 pm). It includes praise and worship, inner healing service, preaching of God’s word, confession and eucharistic celebration.
