Tariq Ahmed Batloo: The mystery ‘terrorist’ still on the run

Goa residence: Unknown, arrested in Margao
This is the only case where the terror links of accused are not known. Nor is there evidence of his involvement in any cases of terror. Yet this was Goa Police’s first major arrest. Batloo was arrested while alighting from the train at the Margao Railway Station in March 2006. A big haul of RDX, hand grenades and detonators were seized from him, but the investigation of the case itself was full of loopholes experts say. Margao’s fast track court acquitted him in 2010 and by the time Goa Police challenged his acquittal, he had already crossed the State’s borders and is now beyond the reach of Goa Police. After failing to respond to several summons, The Bombay High Court at Goa declared him proclaimed offender. However, reports from Kashmir have consistently claimed that this was a false arrest and Batloo belonged to a respectable family. The Goa Police have virtually given up looking for him.
