MARGAO: Saying that education is the key to development and progress, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao on Saturday said that education has become a complex task and more challenging and much more difficult due to rapid social, economic and cultural changes.
“The mission of education, however, remains, in spite of this changing scenario, towards the integral development and all round formation of the young minds”, the Archbishop said, while addressing a Fuller Life Program “Faculty Enrichment seminar-workshop” organised by Royal Goan Beach Club, Academy of Self Actualization in association with Fatima Convent High School, Margao at the Black Box, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on Saturday.
Stating that teachers are the main actors in the field of education, he said teaching is not so much a profession, but a vocation for a mission, which calls for passion.
“Teaching is a vocation. A call is always a sign of God’s special love for the person who is called. You are not teachers by chance. By a vocation, you have been called by God”, he said, while citing vocation stories from the Bible.
Speaking further, he said vocation is always for a mission and teaching has a three-fold mission.
“First, teachers are called to be instructors, to impart knowledge to students so that they become learned persons. The second aspect is that teachers are called to be educators, to bring out the best in the students and help the students discover their talents and develop their faculty. And, lastly, the third dimension is to help them grow and impart in them a set of values and transform them” he said.
On the occasion, launched the website of Fatima Convent High School.
Leo D’Mello of the Academy of Self Actualization was the facilitator.
