PANJIM: Goa is reeling under severe heat for the last few days with the mercury touching around 36 degrees Celsius, causing extreme distress to people across the State.
The metrological centre at Althino recorded a temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning and the minimum temperature is about one to two degrees higher than the above average.
“The weather will be dry over Goa for the next five days. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Panjim at 22 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The temperature of 36.6 degrees C recorded in the previous week was the highest over the last 10 years for the month of February,” the Met Department said.
Meanwhile, the maximum and minimum temperatures for 24 hours are likely to be around 36degrees C and 22 degrees C respectively and this could continue for another day.
The rise in temperature has also pushed up the demand for tower fans and coolers in the market with electrical stores saying that people prefer these over air conditioners due to heavy electrical unit charges.
“I have sold 16 coolers and the demand is very high. Even the stockists don’t have enough supply due to the high demand. Goa is experiencing high temperatures making it uneasy for the people,” said Babloo Qureshi, a storekeeper at Panjim market.
