PANJIM: A day after Smart City contractor carried out patch work along Caculo Mall to Tonca Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) road stretch, massive potholes have resurfaced due to the continuous rains.
It is pertinent to note that on Saturday, Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) appointed contractor who is executing the work of road infrastructure was seen carrying out patch work using road stone gravel of three different sizes, however, due to incessant rains the material used has been washed off and the massive potholes have resurfaced along the said stretch causing great inconvenience to the commuters.

Political activist Cecille Rodrigues said that the particular road stretch has become extremely dangerous for motorists and demanded that it should be closed for vehicular traffic.
“The mixture which the contractor used cannot withstand as the rainfall is extremely heavy. They should have temporarily tarred the road before the onset of the monsoon. Nobody is bothered about the safety of commuters. The road is full of potholes and poses a threat to commuters, particularly those travelling by bike. Considering the safety of commuters the road should be closed,” Rodrigues said.
Former Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor and senior Councillor Uday Madkaikar said, “Consultants and engineers concerned should be held accountable for deteriorating condition of roads in Panjim as they have failed in their technical expertise. It was their duty to supervise the work executed by contractors. They should be taken to task as public money is being used by the government to pay crores of rupees to such consultants and lakhs of rupees to engineers.”
He further said that roads caving in has become a common sight in Panjim. “At night in darkness smart city contractors are filling the cave in stretches with debris. Potholes have developed on almost all roads where works were undertaken under the smart city,” he added.
