Ten held in raid on gambling den

PANJIM: In a major raid on gambling at Patradevi-Pernem, the Crime Branch on Sunday morning arrested ten people including those from neighbouring Sindhudurg and Sawantwadi districts of Maharashtra, and seized gambling articles and cash worth Rs 2.13 lakh.
In a press statement, Crime Branch PI Jivba Dalvi said that acting on a tipoff that a gambling den is in operation near the martyrs memorial at Patradevi, the raid was conducted early Sunday morning.
He said that reliable information was received about card gambling activity at Patradevi since some days.
He said that total cash of Rs 2.13 lakh along with other gambling articles were seized.
During the raid ten people — Sharad Arolkar (Pernem), Soma Raul
(Sindhudurg), Vinayak Paradkar (Sindhudurg), Kishore Samant
(Sindhudurg), Pankaj Parab (Sindhudurg), Shabbir Khan (Sawantwadi), Manguesh Sawant (Sawantwadi), Sanjay Gawas (Dodamarg) and Sakharam Shetye (Dodamarg) were placed under arrest.
An offence under section 11(2)(a) Goa Public Gambling Act has been registered against all the accused.
The team that conducted the raid comprised of Dalvi, PSI Marlon D’Souza and Head constable Umesh Dessai, Umesh Fadte and Constables Vinayak Sawant, Vijay Naik, Brijesh Naik, Andrew Dsouza, Sunil Naik, Utkarsh Dessai, Venkata Prasad and Shamba Shetgaonkar.
In June, matka gambling den was raided by police in Pernem and had seized Rs 60 lakhs.
