MARGAO: The South Goa Sessions Court on Saturday released on bail Afzal Khan alias Pathan, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who was arrested by the Verna police as a terror suspect last year.
The court ordered the release of the accused on a bail of Rs 20,000 and one surety and not to leave the state of Goa.
Interestingly, the police submitted to the court that the investigating agency is still awaiting sanction from the Centre to proceed against the accused under the Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act. It is learnt that the police wanted to book the accused under the Prevention of unlawful activities act, but is still awaiting sanction from the central government.
What’s interesting to note is that the National Investigation Agency had reportedly turned down the state government’s plea to take up investigations into the case under the NIA Act.
The Verna police had arrested the accused in August last year and he was behind the bars since then.
