PANJIM: As Goa waits for 2017, to either vote for change or hand over power to the same government, within the sprawling Goa University campus, their wait is over. Their time for change has arrived and it is right here and right now.
The elections to the students council is less than a week away and it’s a universe which is removed for the hurly burly of the narrative of the Assembly elections. But this is also a very real world, the world of student politics, the world of tomorrow’s leaders, and above all a world of issues that students believe will be sorted only by themselves.
In this universe of the university, these are the things that matter. Issues concerning fees for the re-verification of their answer papers, problems concerning their attendance and the all season issue of transportation including bus fares.
“University elections are very important to us, especially from a student’s perspective. A student’s body is a perfect organization for student’s welfare, as there is no better group of representatives than a student to address the problems of fellow students and also help them,” said Edeana Fernandes, a post-graduation student at GU.
Another student Ben Quadros says GUSC elections are important, as every student has the right to vote and elect the correct representatives and mentioned that there should not be any political influence, if things are to run smoothly.
And as for aspiring young leaders, being elected in the GUSC elections is seen as a stepping stone to success for various political parties in the state. Let’s flag the issues.
Issues
Re-verification fee
The re-verification fee has been increasing every semester, and students have demanded that the fee be stabilized and that if the teacher has made an error in correcting the paper, the fee should be refunded.
University buses
The long-pending issue of University buses remains unsolved, as students face difficulties in reaching the campus as buses are packed. The demand is to increase the number of buses from various towns.
Attendance issue
Recently, the attendance issue had rocked Dhempe College of Arts and Science, wherein students who had not been able to clear the semester-end examination after failing to cover 75 percent attendance during a semester.
