Motorists have found an added reason to drive between Gulem in Canacona taluka and Balli in Quepem taluka during the monsoon, as they are attracted to the many roadside marts selling locally grown vegetables and fruits.
With the number of local growers increasing their produce, these vendors are seen in clusters selling their produce to highway motorists, who are eager to pick up local vegetables and fruits.
Among the seasonal vegetables and fruits, the muskmelon (locally called Chibod) is the most sought after fruit and is sold by various vendors between Gulem and Balli.
These roadside bazaars at different points along the highway sell everything locally grown in the hilly terrain, including local bananas, special red chillies of Canacona, ladyfingers, cucumbers, pumpkins, etc.
“The vendors earn hefty profits in comparison with the rates that they would have got by selling their wares in some town or city markets,” said a source.
If one is lucky, motorists can also find hill growers selling wild mushrooms of different varieties, but these are in high demand and are sold quickly.
“Suitable sunny weather is required for give better and faster yield of these seasonal fruits. Now, as the rains are subsiding, one can expect more yield of seasonal vegetables and fruits,” a source from the Agriculture Department told Herald.
Such has been the demand for local vegetables and fruits that roadside vendors refuse to entertain bargaining by motorists.
Even the famous Canacona chillies, renowned for their taste and colour, are quoted rates ranging as high as Rs 400-450 per pack, which the growers claims to be a 1 kg in weight.
Most roadside their produce under makeshift shades, which they occupy throughout the day.
