Bicholim: The construction of the proposed Chorao-Ribandar bridge has raised a ray of hope with the authorities claiming the sale deed for purchasing land under procurement policy is being vetted by the law department and the government has sanctioned Rs 13.03 crore for land purchase.
It may be stated that Chorao – Ribandar bridge is a long pending demand of the people not only from Chorao but also from Mayem, Bicholim and other parts. The proposed bridge serves link between Mayem constituency and Ribandar.
Most of the people plying from Bicholim to Panjim prefer this route via ferry as it saves their time and distance. The United Citizens of Chorao ( UCC) have been demanding for this bridge since long.
“ If this bridge is constructed it would help not only the people from Chorao but also from Bicholim and surrounding areas. The distance between Chorao and Panjim would be reduced to just about 15 minutes.” a resident of Chorao said.
The Congress government had laid two foundation stones before the 2012 elections. The first was at Orando- Chorao then another at Divadi ferry point. This bridge has always been in all the party’s manifesto but very few really tried to do anything on this matter.
The locals have always demanded that there should be two ferries stationed on the Chorao side even during night time so that people could use it during emergency. “During emergency, at night time the nearest place is Panjim and if there is no ferry we have to take the person to Bicholim PHC” residents demand.
