VASCO: While Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) is gearing up to celebrate Lord Damodar Saptah on August 12, it seems to have forgotten about the condition of the signboards at the traffic island near the railway station.
MMC had installed four illuminating signboards indicating the direction to the council, Vasco Railway station, Swantantra Path road and IOC junction. These signboards used to help tourists to find hotels/lodges and other business establishments located along the Swantantra Path road.
However, with some signboards broken and others in dilapidated, the tourists are left at the mercy of rickshaw and tourist taxi drivers to guide them to reach either to a hotel/lodge or the railway station.
Some rickshaw and tourist taxi drivers have blamed MMC for the sorry state of affairs of the city. “The council does not even have the feeling that the city belongs to them. They have just neglected the city and are only interested of their own well-being,” alleged a driver.
Councillor Tarak Kerkar also blamed the council and staff for the sorry state of affairs. “The staff should survey the city and repair whatever is in a dilapidated condition, but they fail to do so as they have the blessing of the councillors,” she added.
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Sunita Usgoankar declined to comment on the condition of the signboards, but assured to send a technical staffer to find the location and verify the state of the signboards.
Chief Officer Y B Tavde assured to replace the signboards and also promised to install more signboards at required places for the betterment of the citizens and tourists.
