CANACONA: Burglars targeted as many as 12 shops in Chaudi and Nagorcem in Canacona in the wee hours of Thursday besides making an abortive bid to break into a bank.
According to sources, the burglars broke into 12 different establishments between 12 am and 2.30 am on Thursday. The establishments burgled included two wholesale liquor shops, a hardware shop, two plywood shops, a bar and restaurant, an artwork shop and a general store. Incidentally, one wholesale liquor shop was targeted for the third time in the last 12 months.
The gate of a bank located in Omkar Building, across KTC bus stand, Chaudi, was also bent but the burglars left without attempting to open the locker.
According to police, only a hardware shop owner at Nagarcem lodged a police complaint that cash of Rs 3,000 was taken away.
“We are investigating in the lone complaint received and are trying to piece together whatever links we got so far to find the culprits,” said Canacona PI Harischandra Madkaikar.
According to sources, a police beat team saw the shutters bent and woke up the concerned people at about 2.30 am. Incidentally, the watchman at an ATM of a different bank located just across the bank, where the shutter was bent, was woken up by the police beat team.
Sources at the artwork shop informed that cash of Rs 1,000 was found missing from a counter drawer.
