In a shocking incident that took place on Wednesday, five individuals under the influence of alcohol engaged in an argument with the owner of a bar and restaurant in Siolim. The situation escalated as they assaulted the owner and one of them fired a gunshot at his business partner. The Anjuna Police have made three arrests, including the individual who fired the pistol, James D’Souza (44) from Duler, Mapusa. Two other suspects are currently on the run.
Team Herald went on-site to gather further details about the case. According to the complaint filed by Akshit Shetty (30), the owner of ‘El Patron’ restaurant in Vaddy, Siolim, James D’Souza and four others entered his establishment after midnight. A verbal altercation ensued, which escalated into physical assault as the group attacked Shetty with a blunt object. They also hurled verbal abuses and caused damage to the premises. Subsequently, they retrieved a pistol and fired at Shetty’s business partner, Uday.

Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi, in collaboration with Anjuna PI Prashal Desai, formed a team and successfully located James D’Souza and Mohammad Sahid Maniyar (29) from Karasvaddo in Morjim, Pernem. Both were apprehended. The third suspect, Suraj Anupkumar Singh (19) from Karasvaddo, was intercepted at Tivim Railway Station as he attempted to flee the state.
“The firearm used in the incident was a professional pistol; however, the owner failed to provide proper ownership documentation. A shot was fired at the complainant’s partner, but fortunately, it missed the target. The accused individuals have been charged with attempted murder,” stated Dalvi.
On Thursday, the Mapusa JMFC Court remanded five days of police custody to the three accused. The Anjuna Police are actively pursuing the remaining two suspects who are currently at large. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
