MARGAO: Industries and Mines Department officials earlier this week conducted a raid Guirdolim and seized three boats including one fitted with a motor for carrying out illegal sand extraction from the tributary of river Kushawati at Bacho.
It may be recalled that residents of Bacho led by Rock Cardoso had complained about this illegal activity to various authorities including the Collector South who had asked the Mamlatdar to handle the case and the Mamlatdar in turn had written to the Captain of Ports about it.
In fact Herald had reported this issue in its edition dated 26th Nov 2018.
Five officials of Industries and Mines led by Assistant Geologists along with the Marine Inspector of Captain of Ports swooped down at the place where the sand extraction was carried out and seized the boats and other material used.
It may be relevant to point out that in 2013 also the government authorities had seized the equipment used to extract sand at a place called Akaband in the same ward.
Significantly the boat used for extracting the sand is not registered and that is another violation by the person who is believed to be from the neighbouring village of Curtorim.
