Three candidates likely to be elected unopposed

PANJIM: Three candidates are likely to be declared elected unopposed to three different village panchayats.

The Goa State Election Commission (GSEC) received only one nomination paper from Nikhita Narvekar (ward no. 3) of Bhironda village panchayat, Vitho Varak (ward no. 2) of Mauxi village panchayat and Stefanie Lucas (ward no. 2) Chicalim village panchayat. They will be declared elected unopposed if their nominations are found in order during scrutiny on Friday.

The ward 3 of Bhiroda panchayat and ward 2 of Mauxi panchayat in Sattari taluka fell vacant following resignation of then panchayat members Bindiya Gaude and Satyawan Humano respectively after both joined government service.

The bye-election in ward 2 of Chicalim panchayat of Mormugao taluka was necessitated after the then panchayat member Ana Maria Azaredo quit and left for United Kingdom.

Similarly, Nikhita Sakhalkar is also likely to be declared elected unopposed from ward 8 of Valpoi municipal council. She was the only candidate who filed her nomination from this ward, which was reserved for women candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities.
