MARGAO, JAN 5
After maintaining vigil for the last eight months, youth of Benaulim on Tuesday finally tasted success when they caught red handed three persons dumping sacks laden with vegetable and other waste along the road leading to St John the Baptista Church.
Since the waste has found its way into Benaulim from adjoining Colva village, Benaulim Sarpanch Carmelina Fernandes has asked her Colva counterpart to immediately revoke the license of the establishment or threatened to bring the situation to the notice of the high court. “Enough is enough. Either the Colva Panchayat should revoke the licence or I will bring the instance to the notice of the high court on January 19”, she warned.
Colva Sarpanch Angela Borges, who came to the site, had to face a barrage of questions from the youth, who demanded action against establishments dumping garbage in Benaulim near the St John the Baptista Church. Borges, however, said that the question of revocation of license of the establishment will be taken only after the matter is placed before the meeting of the Panchayat body.
Roque Fernandes told newsmen that it has been nearly eight months since the vegetable waste was being continuously dumped along the road side, which has forced farmers to stop cultivation of their fields.
“Finally, we have caught red handed the persons involved in the waste dumping”, he said, even as the people made the three culprits to collect the waste and lift it away.
Colva Civic and Consumer Forum secretary Judith Almeida demanded that the Colva Panchayat immediately revoke the license of the vegetable stall located near the four roads. “It was our good luck that the boys from Benaulim caught the miscreants. Farmers have suffered over the months because of the waste dumping near the Church”, she added.
