PANJIM: Goa will go ahead with the tendering process to set up at least three garbage treatment plants within two or three weeks, chief minister Manohar Parrikar announced on Thursday.
Fresh from his Germany visit, Parrikar told Herald that he visited the garbage treatment plant at Kerserflatun, 110 kms away from Frankfurt during his private visit to the country, last week. He informed that the technology that would be adopted by plants to be set up in Goa would be similar to that of Keserflatun facility, which is set up inside the US military base housing 65,000 soldiers.
The State Government plans to set up the plants at Calangute, Bainguinim and another one in South Goa, which will not emit any foul smell. The final product that would churn out from the garbage would be fuel pellets or gas, which could be used for commercial purpose.
Parrikar said that Calangute MLA Michael Lobo might be sent to Frankfurt facility to have first-hand experience because a treatment plant is being set up in his constituency.
The chief minister said that the contractors for commissioning the plants on BOOT basis have already been shortlisted and tenders would be floated within two to three weeks. But the government would do the gap funding for the project, Parrikar said.
