PORVORIM: The Tamil Nadu native who was arrested by Canacona police on Wednesday in connection with the theft of Rs 12.10 lakh from Bank of India, Mapusa was brought to the Mapusa Police Station on Thursday.
Mapusa police registered an offence against him under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code. He also was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, who remanded him to police custody for five days.
Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar informed that the accused M Madhusudan (39), on interrogation, admitted to robbing the bank and said the bag of cash was with his accomplice. He added, “The police feel that this robbery was committed by more than two people, but the accused has stated that the robbery was committed by him and the accomplice seen in the CCTV footage. He is not disclosing the names of the others.”
Police stated that the robbery had taken place due to sheer negligence of the bank staff.
An official said, “In the first place, the cashier, after keeping the bag of cash in her cabin, should have closed the door. Secondly, although the CCTV camera was installed in the bank, there was nobody to monitor the same. If there was staff to monitor the CCTV, the theft would have been detected immediately. Thirdly, the bank officials who were sitting beside the cashier’s cabin should have questioned the accused when he entered the prohibited area.”
