Tourism season comes to an end

Shack owners asked to dismantle temporary structures

PANJIM: With just 10 per cent of beach shacks operating during the last month of the tourism season, shack owners have begun dismantling the structures as the tourism season concluded on May 31.
Sources said that around 90 percent of the shacks discontinued operations before May due to various reasons like delay in issuance of NOC, slack business and cyclone impact on two occasions.
With the season concluding, Tourism Department has formed squads to ensure that beaches are shack-free and signs are installed warning tourists not to swim in the sea.
The last chartered flight carrying international tourists to Moscow (Russia) mid-May culminated the international tourist season.
Tourism Department directed shack allottees to dismantle and dispose all material without causing any damage to the environment. All shack structures have to be dismantled by May 31, 2018 and a report submitted by June 10, 2018, and shack allottees will have to submit a report to the department on the manner in which the material has been disposed of by June 20.   The circular added, “In case any shack allottee is found causing any environment hazard while disposing of the material, the allotment of the shack to such defaulter would be cancelled for the next tourism season besides being liable for prosecution under the law in force,” it warns.
IGP asks cops to stay alert
PANJIM: Against the backdrop of two offences reported on the beaches within days of each other, the police brass has directed the personnel to maintain strict vigil in open spaces including beaches while ensuring that senior citizens are safe.
Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh exhorted the field staff and others to improve visibility and increase police presence at these places. In a Samparak Sabha (North District) held on Thursday, the IGP advised the staff to be sensitive to the needs of women, children and senior citizens. He advised Police Station staff to ascertain that senior citizens living alone and are vulnerable, are safe.
The staff was also asked to continue their drive against drug peddlers and take action against foreigners openly flouting traffic rules.
