Traditional fishermen restricted to use only notified sites

PANJIM: In an effort to strengthen security at major fish landing centres and traditional ramps, the government has restricted traditional fishermen to use only notified sites.

The move comes after a recommendation made by the Coastal Security Coordination Committee to ban fish landing at any landing centres/ramps other than those notified.
“Fish landing takes place at various major landing centres as well as traditional landing centres (ramps). It has become necessary to monitor all ramps in the State and restrict the number of landing centres from the point of view of coastal security,” the notification states.
The government has now decided to make it mandatory for fishing canoes to land fish only at notified landing ramps besides traditional beach landing. At the first instance, 28 fish landing ramps at Ponda, Salcete, Bardez, Tiswadi and Pernem have been notified as fish landing centres for the traditional fishing canoes.
