PONDA: Residents of Kavlem village have called on the government to take action to preserve a traditional natural spring located at Betalwada-Gautan, Kavlem. The locals emphasise the significance of this spring, which flows year-round and serves as a crucial source of drinking water, especially during the dry summer months when water from the Opa Water works is in short supply.
Yogesh Kavlekar, a local panchayat member, reported that he, along with other villagers, recently undertook efforts to clean the spring and the adjacent nullah (stream). He spoke about the need for landowners to provide the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOC) to facilitate the protection and preservation of the spring. Kavlekar noted, “In times of water shortage, residents rely on the spring for drinking and other essential uses. This used to be a perennial spring, bursting with life throughout the year, and the water used to be known for its medicinal properties,” he added.

The villagers, led by Kavlekar, stressed the importance of protecting local water bodies and springs that supply water throughout the year. They expressed concerns about the pollution and blockage of water flow caused by some individuals dumping garbage and debris into the spring and nullah.
Historically, the spring at Betalwada-Gautan has been a vital resource for the community, providing water for drinking, bathing, and washing clothes, long before the introduction of tap water supply, said the villagers.
The residents are hopeful that with the support of the panchayat and the Water Resources Department (WRD), measures will be taken to preserve this important natural resource.
