Traffic Cell conducts surprise helmet check in Parra

CALANGUTE: The Mapusa Traffic Cell conducted a surprise check for helmets in the interiors of Parra and issued challans to hundreds of motorists without helmets.

A few motorists raised an alarm for others, who either changed their route or returned home.  There was utter chaos at the dangerous turn near the temple in Parra, where the traffic officers and staff waited for helmet-less riders.
The residents of Calangute and surrounding areas going for their regular shopping to Mapusa and parents binging their children home from school were the worst affected.
Meanwhile, a few locals have questioned the need for helmets in the village interiors, especially on a weekend.
They claimed that the helmet drive was nothing but harassment for tourists and others.
They also questioned the inaction of the Mapusa Traffic Cell in curbing rash and negligent driving, which recently even killed a girl who was waiting for a bus.
“We do not understand why the Mapusa Traffic Cell comes to Parra and carries out surprise checks for two-wheeler riders without helmets. The traffic cell should concentrate on controlling rash and negligent driving on the roads, which are causing tragic accidents and lives are being lost.  The drive against helmets is nothing but a money-making racket at the cost of poor motorists,” said Sarvesh, a local.
