Traffic violations on the rise in Mapusa

Mapusa traffic cell books 46,075 cases of traffic violations and collects revenue Rs 66,09,050 from fines in 2017

The statistics from Mapusa Traffic Cell reveal that the Police had a busy year in 2017.
 The Mapusa traffic cell booked 46,075 cases of traffic violation and collected revenue of Rs 66,09,050 from the fines imposed. There was no increase in crime, but the rise in traffic violations rose three times.
From Rs 44, 81,500 lakh in 2016 the revenue collected in 2017 is Rs 66, 090, 50 and from 36,169 cases, the cases registered in 2017 are 46076. The most violated rule was riding without helmet. Around 16,516 cases of riding without helmet were registered in 2017, creating revenue of Rs 19,53,800 followed by 5,712 cases of no parking with revenue of Rs 571,700. Around 4,673 cases of dangerous parking  were registered with revenue of Rs 4,67,500. Around 2,880 cases of driving without seat belt and 2,281 of no entry were booked.
Rash and negligence cases from 266 cases in year 2016 rose to 907 in the year 2017 with creating revenue of Rs 6, 71,950 and more.
Speaking to Herald, the officer on duty said, “People don’t bother to follow any rule when actually the rules are framed to save their own life, especially the youth. People not only put their life in danger but also risk life of others. Helmet is the most important thing which protects the head and life of riders. Even after imposing so much of fine, people prefer paying off the fines and ride negligently”.
“Nowadays the youth think that the traffic rules are made only for the old persons and not for them as they think they are cool dudes. But unfortunately they don’t know they are destroying their life by not following the same rules,” said Maygal Nazareth, a resident of Mapusa.
