PONDA: It was a tragic end to a septuagenarian couple from Ponda, when the husband assaulted his wife leading to her death and he died of multiple ailments two days later.
According to police reports, Vasudev Nayak (75) and his wife Vijaya (70) were residing by themselves in a flat at St Cruz in Ponda.
On May 14 at about 8.15 pm, Vasudev, who was unwell with a number of ailments, got annoyed with his wife over an undisclosed reason and struck her with his walking stick.
Vijaya sustained multiple injuries on her body and one such injury caused internal bleeding of her mouth.
The blood is believed to have blocked her respiration, leading to her death, police said.
Vasudev was unaware that Vijaya had passed away and he alerted some relatives after seeing her lifeless on the floor.
On May 15, Vasudev developed complications and relatives shifted him to a private hospital in Margao, where he breathed his last on Friday.
Ponda police registered a case under Section 304 IPC following the death of Vijaya Nayak.
