Residents report loss of household items

MARGAO: Tuesday’s flooding in Sanvorcotto ward in Cuncolim has left a trail of destruction, with over a dozen-odd compound walls crumbling down in the locality, while beleaguered residents reported huge loss of household items in the unprecedented flooding.
As teams of five talathis and two circle inspectors went door-to-door across Sanvorcotto, they were flooded with complaints of damaged compound walls, refrigerators, vehicles, utensils and other household items. A Salcete mamlatdar official told Herald the flooding has brought down a large number of compound walls in the area.
Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado along with Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik, District Collector N D Agrawal, Salcete Mamlatdar Triveni Velip, besides Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Dessai visited the affected areas on Wednesday. The residents narrated to them their ordeal during the flood.
A resident Rajesh Desai told the visiting team that his brand new A-Star car was submerged in the flood water parked in the car porch outside his house. He also complained of damage to his household items.
The Fisheries Minister issued directions to the District Collector to remove the pipe culvert and build the road across the river immediately. “The culvert and the road was the main cause responsible for flooding in Sanvorcotto,” he added.
The CMC Chairperson Devendra Desai squarely blamed the GSIDC for the floods. He has urged Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to order an inquiry into the flooding and bring the culprits to book. He expressed his anguish that none of the GSIDC officials have made their presence felt at the site till date to ascertain the ground reality.
He said work on removing the pipes from the rivulet from the culvert is still underway with the help of earth moving machinery made available by two industrialists from the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
Salcete Mamlatdar Triveni Velip said two teams from the PWD were also roped in to assess the damage to the residential houses. “So far, my talathis have conducted panchanama vis-a-vis 60 houses. The exercise will continue tomorrow and the report will be ready by Thursday evening,” she said.
Meanwhile, the 25 families who were evacuated from flood prone area of Milleanvaddo were provided shelter at the recreation centre at Maddicotto. Salcete mamlatdar sources said that the talathis have also assessed the damage caused to houses at Panzorconne, Milleamwaddo, Mollanguinim, Zuzegal and Dandora.
