MERCES: A huge mango tree came crashing down at Voilem Bhatt-Merces in the wee hours of Tuesday, disrupting power supply and traffic in the area for several hours.
Speaking to Herald, Panjim fire station sub officer Arjun Parab informed that they received a call at around 2.55 am on Tuesday that a mango tree had fallen at Merces.
“We immediately rushed to the site and started clearing the area,” he informed, while adding that personnel from the Old Goa fire station also joined in the operation.
Luckily, there were no major damages to any houses barring minor damage to one house on which some branches had fallen, which were later cleared by the fire personnel.
However, two electricity poles, one high tension and one low tension, were uprooted in the incident.
“Also, several conductors have been damaged,” informed AE Chandramodi who was present at the site.
Meanwhile, in another incident that apparently occurred on Monday morning at Mesta Bhatt-Merces, a worker’s family had a lucky escape as a banyan tree uprooted and crashed on the room they were staying in. However, before the falling tree could strike the room, the worker and his family managed to rush out.
Tiswadi Mamlatdar Madhu Narvekar and Merces Sarpanch Walter D’Souza were present at both the sites to take stock of the incidents. The talathi also inspected the sites and submitted a report to the government for necessary compensation to the affected families.
