CANACONA: Trees that were posing a danger to commuters on the national highway between Polem and Karmalghat are now being cut following persistent follow up by the public.
The work commenced on Friday. The authorities started cutting the tree on the NH road side from Polem in Canacona. These dangerous trees where earlier identified and numbered with the help of PWD, forest and agriculture departments.
Sources said that there are 41 dead or partially dead trees apart from other live trees identified by the PWD as being dangerous to the road users, along this stretch.
Accidents occurred due to the trees obstructing the view.
In all four trees were cut and canopy of two trees was trimmed on Friday at Mashem by engaging 15 labourers from the disaster management office of Canacona.
Officer in-charge of fire office at Canacona Mahadev Lolienkar speaking to Herald said most of the identified trees were right beside the highway and needed meticulous planning due to vehicles passing every minute on this road. In addition there are also overhead electrical wires which have to be considered. It will take a few more days to cut the remaining trees, he added.
