MARGAO: The Maina-Curtorim police on Wednesday arrested Namolo Mahammad Yakub Rehmatulla Shaikh, a native of Dandeli in Karnataka, the driver of the ill-fated truck that rammed the Ambora tea stall cum store on May 12, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old girl and injuring four others.
The driver has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The police have also brought the cleaner of the truck Shabiz Ali from Dandeli, who had fled from the accident site along with the driver Shaikh.
It is learnt that after the accident at Ambotra, the driver Shaik fell unconscious and the cleaner, fearing for his life, picked him up and put him in another truck which was following the ill-fated one.
PSI Deu Mangaonkar is investigating the case.
Meanwhile, agitated residents of Camurlim stopped an overloaded truck meters away from the accident site as the vehicle posed danger to the motorists and villagers alike. The residents were demanded the presence of RTO officers to check the vehicle and initiate necessary action.
